Implant dentistry provides permanent restorative solutions for individuals who have lost one or more of their natural teeth. Composed of pure titanium, a dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically implanted into the jaw. After it has had time to graft onto the jawbone - usually about three to six months - a restoration such as a crown, bridge, or denture is secured to it. Dental implants offer many benefits when used to replace missing teeth. In addition to providing the look and feel of natural teeth, dental implants restore nearly all of a person’s chewing strength, improve the structural integrity of a person’s smile, and reduce the risk of gum disease and bite problems that result from missing teeth. Dental implants will not accidentally slip or fall out, as dentures can, and for many, they can even improve speaking ability. Because they not only fill the visible space between teeth, but also the empty root space in the jaw, dental implants also prevent the discomfort that results when teeth surrounding a missing tooth shift from their normal position.
Dr. Russell is proud to offer this service to his patients as a way to restore healthy, gorgeous smiles. If you live in or around Louisville, Jeffersonville, or New Albany and would like more information about dental implants, please contact us today.
At our office, we believe in painless dentistry. It is estimated that 30 to 40 million Americans suffer from some form of dental anxiety. Individuals with mild anxiety may experience a small amount of discomfort when arriving for a dental appointment. However, people who suffer from a more severe form of dental anxiety, known as dental phobia, may be so controlled by their fear that they might not visit a dentist at all. Individuals with this condition who do decide to see a dentist may be unable to sleep the night before their appointment or may become sick in the waiting room of their dentist's office. We don’t want anyone to miss out on the dental care they need and we don’t think anyone should have to suffer through a dental visit.
Thankfully there is a solution for the many people who suffer from dental anxiety. Sedation dentistry allows individuals to receive the treatment they need without the discomfort and anxiety they might otherwise experience. At our Louisville office, we perform conscious sedation dentistry by providing patients with oral medication. By simply taking a pill prior to your visit, you will enter a deep state of relaxation, during which time you can safely receive the treatment you require. During your appointment, you will be able to respond to questions from Dr. Russell; however, the effects of the medication will help you remain calm and relaxed throughout your visit.
Patients in New Albany, Jeffersonville, and surrounding areas can contact our Louisville office for more information on sedation dentistry.
In the past, silver fillings were commonly used to fill the space left by tooth decay and prevent the further loss of a tooth. Although such fillings can improve the health of your teeth, they can also detract from the appearance of your smile. This is why we use only tooth-colored fillings at our general and cosmetic dentistry practice. Made of composite resin, these fillings are as durable as their metal counterparts yet are virtually undetectable when used to fill cavities. Individuals who have silver fillings can also have them replaced with white fillings for a more natural-looking smile.
Dental crowns are custom-made “caps” that are crafted to be placed over damaged teeth. A crown helps to restore beauty and strength to a tooth that is discolored or has suffered extensive structural damage. A crown will only work, however, on a tooth that still has a stable, healthy root. If you have a tooth with a damaged root, the dentist may suggest tooth replacement options, such as bridges or dental implants.
Receiving a crown normally requires two visits to our Louisville dental office. During your first visit, Dr. Russell will prepare your damaged tooth for the crown. An impression of your teeth will also be taken. This will be sent to a lab where your crown is created to match your smile’s specifications. During your second visit, Dr. Russell will carefully fit the crown over your prepared tooth in order to give you a healthy new smile.
At our office, Dr. Russell offers patients all-porcelain crowns. Like porcelain dental veneers, these restorations feature a property called translucency. As light comes in contact with a tooth, the tooth's enamel causes it to diffuse. This gives teeth their characteristic sheen. Porcelain reproduces the translucency of tooth enamel, which means that your restoration will be extremely natural looking. All-porcelain crowns also contain no metal bases to discolor your new smile. To see the significant difference between porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns with all-porcelain crowns, visit our cosmetic dentistry smile gallery.

A dental bridge can help restore confidence to individuals who have lost one or more of their natural teeth by filling the resulting space. A bridge consists of two crowns connected by an artificial tooth. As the crowns are placed over the teeth surrounding a gap, the artificial tooth literally bridges the empty space, creating a full smile. Bridges produce an extremely natural appearance because they are custom made to complement the size, shape, and color of surrounding teeth. These restorations also help to improve the structural integrity of a person’s smile and reduce the risk of bite problems and gum disease, both of which can result from missing teeth. If you think you may be a candidate for a bridge, and live in Louisville, Jeffersonville, or New Albany, please contact us today to learn more.
If you have lost several or all of your teeth and would like to regain the confidence that comes from having a beautiful smile, custom dentures may be the answer. Dentures provide patients with new, natural-looking teeth that help to increase chewing comfort and speaking ability.
Full dentures are used when a person has lost all or nearly all of his or her teeth. Custom made to fit comfortably inside the mouth, full dentures are held in place by muscles in the tongue, cheeks, and lips. Unlike dental implants, which are surgically implanted in the jaw, dentures are removable for cleaning and sleeping.
Partial dentures are designed to fill the space left by several missing teeth. Unlike full dentures, partial dentures rely on clasps or hidden devices called precision attachments for placement and stability. These dentures are custom fitted to match the size and shape of surrounding teeth, which helps to restore chewing strength in addition to providing a wonderful new smile. Additionally, by filling the space left by missing teeth, partial dentures prevent the discomfort and gum damage that results when teeth shift from their natural position.
Dentures can be placed immediately after any remaining teeth are extracted, or after the gums have had a chance to fully heal. Dr. Russell will work together with you to determine which type of denture placement is best suited for your financial and treatment preferences. To learn more about how custom-fitted dentures can restore your smile, please contact our Louisville office today.
The best way to avoid major problems with your teeth and gums is to combine daily at-home care with regular professional cleanings. In general, we recommend that patients visit us twice a year for basic preventative services. If you suffer from dental anxiety, we offer sedation dentistry to allow you to get the care you need without stress or discomfort. During normal office visits we offer teeth cleaning, polishing, and in-house periodontal (gum) treatment. Also, our hygienist is always available to show patients how to best maintain their oral health between appointments.
In performing X-rays, our dental team uses only digital radiography. The use of digital X-ray technology reduces exposure to radiation by up to 90 percent and completely eliminates the need for chemicals. Our intraoral camera also enables us to show patients any problem areas in their teeth and gums in order to help them better understand their treatment needs.
Dr. Russell and his staff regularly treat people of all ages, including children. We recognize the unique care and treatment that children require and strive to provide the highest level of compassion in tending to their needs.
If you live in or around Louisville, Jeffersonville, or New Albany and are interested in sedation dentistry, dental implants, or any of our other services, contact us today. We’ll be happy to answer all of your questions.
